MEET TODAY’S GUEST

Ben & Helene Welling

Bennie’s 9 officially opened in August 2025 after taking over and transforming the former Freedom Square Diner on Freedom Road. It’s a true family operation run by Ben and Helene Welling along with their seven children. The name says it all: Ben + Helene + 7 kids = 9.

“Bennie’s 9 isn’t just a diner — it’s a family story turned into a place where food, hospitality, and community all come together.”

THE INTERVIEW

What Inspired Bennie’s 9

After 25 years in corporate leadership, Ben was laid off — a moment that became the catalyst for something more meaningful. Instead of jumping back into the corporate world, he and Helene saw an opportunity to build a place centered on family, great food, and genuine connection.

Cranberry Township felt like the perfect fit. It’s a growing, family-oriented community that values local businesses. When the chance came to take over the former diner location, everything clicked.

“We wanted to create a spot that wasn’t just about food, but about connection — a place where people could gather, feel welcomed, and be known,” Ben said.

Popular Menu Items

Locals are loving the classics done right — chicken & waffles, biscuits & gravy, and hearty breakfast plates with eggs, bacon, and sausage made in-house. Standouts that keep people coming back include their shrimp & grits and premium burgers.

What Sets Bennie’s 9 Apart

Bennie’s 9 elevates classic diner food without losing its soul. They focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients (sourcing locally whenever possible), make items from scratch, and grind fresh coffee beans every day from Silverstream Coffee.

Beyond the food, it’s the atmosphere and hospitality that stand out. The team is trained to go beyond just taking orders — they aim to make every guest feel genuinely welcomed and cared for.

At its core, Bennie’s 9 is driven by family. “We want everyone who walks in to feel like they’re part of something bigger than just a meal,” the Wellings shared.

Community Response

Since opening, the Cranberry community has embraced Bennie’s 9 with open arms. Lines formed early on, and many guests quickly became regulars. The team has especially loved hearing families share the diner’s story with their kids — talking about hard work, taking risks, and building something together.

A Note for Weekends

Bennie’s 9 gets especially busy on weekends. They offer a convenient waitlist system — guests can join ahead of time through the website or by searching “Bennie’s 9 Diner” on Google. You’ll receive a text when your table is ready. The team turns tables quickly, so even with the wait, service stays efficient.

Favorite Part of Running the Diner

For Ben, it’s the people. “It’s the relationships we’ve built with our guests. Seeing familiar faces, getting to know their names and their stories — that’s what it’s all about.”

He also finds deep fulfillment in creating jobs, mentoring staff, and building a positive culture rooted in their nine core values.

Looking Ahead

Bennie’s 9 is committed to continuous improvement — introducing new specials, seasonal items, and staying active in the community. They’re always working to create new reasons for people to walk through the door.

Their mission is simple yet powerful: to be a big family serving up classic favorites with a side of love, making staff, guests, and neighbors all feel part of something special.
